BRF Lärjedalen

Landscape Revitalization, Gothenurg, Sweden

The open space between the residential buildings was facing multiple challenges that significantly reduced its quality and usability. Poor flooring conditions, insufficient lighting, lack of seating, and disorganized spatial elements created an environment that felt neglected, unsafe, and socially inactive. Despite its remarkable views, the area failed to function as a meaningful gathering space for residents.

Our Approach:

Through site analysis and consultation with both the board of directors and residents, we identified the core spatial, functional, and social deficiencies. The strategy focused on phased implementation, ensuring cost-effective improvements while maintaining long-term adaptability. Key interventions included:

  • Upgraded and safe paving surfaces

  • Improved lighting for visibility and security

  • New seating areas to support social interaction

  • Clear spatial organization and visual order

  • Replacement of dark, heavy structures with lighter and more inviting elements

The objective was to transform an underutilized space into a welcoming and functional communal environment.

Equality & Sustainability

We envisioned a gender-equal environment that caters to all ages:

  • Safety First: Improved lighting and clear sightlines through strategic pruning of trees.

  • Edible Landscape: Planting fruit trees and berry bushes, along with cultivation boxes for residents.

  • Climate Resilience: Providing shade via pergolas and trees, and installing a designed outdoor shower for cooling down on hot summer days.

  • Active Living: Creating distinct zones for play, rest, and social interaction.
