Urban Bloom
Västra Götaland County, Sweden
Biomorphic Intervention in Public Space
Urban Bloom is a site-specific architectural intervention designed to bridge the gap between the rigid urban fabric and the fluid elegance of nature. Inspired by the native flora of Västra Götaland, this installation features a triad of stylized botanical forms, the Lily of the Valley and the Anemone, reimagined through a lens of Biophilic Design.
By introducing organic curves into a linear environment, the project softens the pedestrian experience. These elements function not merely as sculptures, but as urban landmarks that foster a sense of place. The interplay of natural light on the petal surfaces creates a dynamic visual rhythm, evolving with the changing Scandinavian seasons.
Structural Integrity
Tectonic Precision & Material Sophistication
The technical execution of the “Urban Bloom” series focuses on Structural Minimalism. The primary challenge was to achieve a slender, elegant profile while ensuring the structural stability required for public safety and harsh climatic conditions.
Form & Geometry: The transition from two-dimensional sheet material to complex, three-dimensional volumes was achieved through precise digital modeling and advanced fabrication techniques.
Materiality: High-grade weather-resistant alloys were selected, finished with a curated matte coating to minimize glare and emphasize the purity of the form.
Seamless Integration: All structural joints and mounting points are concealed within the “stem” of the elements, maintaining a seamless aesthetic from the base to the crown.
Contextual Adaptation: The scale of the three distinct floral elements was calculated to harmonize with the surrounding architectural height, ensuring they remain prominent without overwhelming the human scale.
Spatial Structure
3D Volume & Spatial Choreography
The Urban Bloom series explores the intersection of verticality and organic curvature. Rather than static objects, these three floral elements are designed as Spatial Markers that define a new sense of place within the urban void.
Volumetric Presence: By utilizing cantilevered “petals” and sweeping “stems,” the structure captures and encloses the air around it, creating a multi-dimensional experience that changes as a pedestrian moves around the installation.
Curvilinear Geometry: The spatial complexity of the Lily of the Valley (the drooping bells) and the Anemone (the open dish) provides a rhythmic contrast. One pulls the eye downward toward the ground plane, while the other opens upward to the sky, creating a balanced Spatial Dialogue.
Scale & Proportion: The height and span of each element were mathematically derived to harmonize with the surrounding architectural facades, ensuring the installation feels like a natural extension of the site’s spatial hierarchy.
Public Space Integration
Placemaking & Social Catalyst
The Urban Bloom installation serves as a Social Anchor within the public realm. By introducing these oversized, recognizable botanical forms, the design transforms a transitional walkway into a “destination.”
Pedestrian Experience: The varying heights of the three elements create a “ceiling” of sorts in an open area, making the large outdoor space feel more intimate and human-scaled.
Visual Wayfinding: As prominent vertical markers, they act as intuitive points of reference, improving the navigability of the Västra Götaland site for residents and visitors alike.
Emotional Resonance: The choice of familiar spring flowers—the Lily of the Valley and the Anemone—taps into collective memory, bringing a sense of warmth and “softness” to the otherwise hard surfaces of the urban environment.
