Redefining the Urban Cross-Section: People First
Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
How do you mix vehicles with pedestrians safely? By designing with empathy and precision. We prioritized the comfort of cyclists and pedestrians with wide, continuous routes. Simultaneously, we engineered the vehicle lanes with calculated turning radii to ensure safety for everyone. A cross-section designed for coexistence.
Designing a city square is a balancing act between flow and safety. In this project, we flipped the traditional hierarchy. By prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists, we created wide, uninterrupted pathways that ensure comfort and continuity.
Design Intent
- Strengthen the town center as a social and spatial anchor
- Improve orientation through clear landmarks and spatial hierarchy
- Balance increased density with human-scale public spaces
- Integrate flood-resilient landscape strategies into the urban fabric
However, safety is a two-way street. We carefully calculated the vehicle rotation radius to define the optimal angle and width for car lanes. The result is a harmonious cross-section where soft mobility thrives without compromising vehicular safety.
The Geometry of Safety
A city square must be a safe haven for all—whether on foot, on a bike, or behind the wheel. Our cross-section design masters this complexity through precise geometry.
Active Mobility: We dedicated generous width to continuous pedestrian and cycle tracks, ensuring a secure and pleasant commute.
Vehicular Precision: Car lanes are strictly defined based on the vehicle rotation radius, ensuring safe turning angles while maintaining a pedestrian-friendly scale.
