Ytterby Station Community

Visualizing Density in a Growing Small-Town Context

This study explores how increased density can be integrated into Ytterby,  a station-centered community in Kungälv,  without compromising its small-town character. The proposal investigates spatial structure, topography, climate, and connectivity to create a more coherent and legible urban center.

Rather than applying generic densification models, the project responds directly to landscape conditions and movement patterns specific to the site.

The area is shaped by ridge formations and gentle slopes, with a higher northern terrain influencing wind exposure and seasonal shadow patterns. There is no deep valley condition, but parallel ridge lines define the visual and spatial forces of the site.

Existing development lacks strong pedestrian links between neighborhoods, and the railway creates a physical and perceptual divide. The proposal strengthens connections between surrounding residential areas and improves bicycle and pedestrian permeability toward the station core. Visual corridors and focal points are preserved and reinforced to enhance orientation and long-distance views.

Design Principles

Functional Structure
Mixed-use functions are positioned near housing to reduce car dependency and activate daily life, strengthening walkability and local vitality.

Traffic & Movement
Street layouts respond to slope conditions, curved alignments on steeper terrain and straighter forms on gentle grades, avoiding long roads parallel to contour lines.

Density & Built Form
Building massing and orientation adapt to topography and solar exposure. On steeper land, articulated forms respond to terrain while maximizing sunlight access.

Climate Strategy
Wind patterns, seasonal shadows, and elevation inform spatial organization. Larger volumes and tree placement enhance microclimate comfort.

Landscape & Identity
A 6–7 story landmark anchors the area, improving legibility and reinforcing identity, while pedestrian and bicycle connections to the station are strengthened.

Porteberget: A New Landmark

The proposal for Porteberget transforms a natural hill into a vibrant residential hub for approximately 500 residents. By introducing structures of 6-7 stories, the project creates a new visual landmark for Ytterby, offering panoramic views over the valley and the Nordre Älv river.

Connectivity & Mobility

The proposal strengthens links between surrounding neighborhoods and the station core. Parking is positioned along the site boundaries to limit vehicular penetration and prioritize pedestrian movement within the area.

New walking and cycling paths create more direct connections across existing barriers, enhancing permeability and reinforcing the role of the station as a central urban anchor.
