Bike-Café & City Gateway

Mölnlycke, Sweden

The Challenge Commissioned by the Härryda Municipality, we were tasked with reimagining the center of Mölnlycke. The challenge was significant: to propose a fresh concept that complemented, yet stood out from, previous extensive studies conducted by White Arkitekter.

Älvängen is a station centered town in western Sweden facing the challenge of growth without
losing its small town identity. The project explores how density, public space, and orientation can
work together to create a more livable center.

Our Approach

  • Our Approach Our winning proposal diverged from traditional methods by focusing on Urban Preservation rather than radical change. Recognizing Mölnlycke’s strategic position among neighboring cities, we centered the design around Cycling Infrastructure, creating a dedicated “Bike-Café” hub that serves as a landmark.

Design Highlights

  • Gateway Identity: Creating a defined entrance point to strengthen the city’s visual identity.

  • Active Topography: We capitalized on the city’s reverse slope, turning physical barriers and edges into dynamic meeting places for people to connect and enjoy.
